Personal Development – Spring 2026: Broadening Horizons and Enriching Experiences

At Haslam Park, our personal development provision is carefully shaped by our school context, including high levels of deprivation, significant numbers of pupils eligible for Pupil Premium and a high proportion of pupils with English as an Additional Language (EAL). We recognise the importance of providing rich, inclusive experiences that develop cultural capital, broaden horizons and ensure that disadvantage does not limit opportunity.

Throughout Spring 2026, pupils have benefited from a wide range of personal development opportunities, including:

  • Equality, diversity and inclusion: Celebrating Eid, Ramadan and Chinese New Year through assemblies, creative activities and reflection, alongside World Autism Awareness Day and Year 5's visit to Bolton Wanderers for the Show Racism the Red Card event.

  • Mental health and wellbeing: Exploring belonging during Children's Mental Health Week, promoting kindness and celebrating individuality.

  • Safety and digital citizenship: Participating in Safer Internet Day, with age-appropriate learning about artificial intelligence, voice assistants, online safety and responsible technology use.

  • Cultural capital and literacy: Celebrating World Book Day through family reading sessions, the Great Footy and Booky Quiz, whole-school Storytelling Week and Year 3 pupils reading to Reception. Year 6 also experienced Shakespeare's Macbeth.

  • Wider experiences and aspirations: Taking part in British Science Week, exploring careers, farming and the work of David Attenborough, alongside a Year 4 visit to Martin Mere to experience wildlife and the natural environment.

  • Citizenship, participation and enrichment: Supporting Race for Life, celebrating International Women's Day through girls' football, participating in National Number Day challenges and developing environmental awareness through practical planting activities.

These opportunities demonstrate the breadth and inclusive nature of our personal development offer, extending learning beyond the classroom and providing experiences that pupils may not otherwise access.

Through our carefully considered approach, we aim to develop pupils' confidence, independence, empathy, cultural understanding and sense of responsibility, while strengthening relationships with families and the wider community.

Our commitment is to ensure that every child, regardless of background, language or disadvantage, has access to meaningful experiences that broaden aspirations, develop character and prepare them for life in modern Britain.
