At Haslam Park Primary School, the personal development and wellbeing of pupils sit at the heart of our curriculum and wider school life. We place equal importance on pupils’ academic success and their personal growth, recognising that both are essential in enabling children to flourish as confident, resilient and responsible individuals.
Our Personal Development provision is broad, ambitious and carefully planned. It encompasses high-quality Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education, Relationships and Health Education, and a rich programme of extra-curricular, enrichment and wider life experiences. Together, these elements ensure pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to lead safe, healthy and fulfilling lives and to make a positive contribution to society.
Leaders have designed our Personal Development offer with a clear understanding of our school context, including the high proportion of pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and those in receipt of Pupil Premium. We are uncompromising in our ambition for these pupils. Personal Development is planned inclusively, with appropriate adaptations and targeted support, and leaders track participation, engagement and impact rigorously. This ensures that all pupils, particularly those who are vulnerable, access and benefit fully from the opportunities provided.
Our Personal Development programme is progressive and coherent. Learning is carefully sequenced to build pupils’ understanding over time and is embedded across the whole curriculum. It supports pupils to develop strong character, positive relationships, emotional literacy, resilience, respect for others and an understanding of fundamental British values. Teaching is underpinned by the National Curriculum, statutory guidance and high-quality resources, ensuring learning is age-appropriate, accurate and meaningful.
We actively promote pupils’ voice and leadership. Children are encouraged to express their views, discuss issues that matter to them and engage thoughtfully with local, national and global events. Through opportunities such as pupil leadership roles, discussions, assemblies and community involvement, pupils learn how to influence change, show responsibility and act with integrity.
As a result of this well-considered and inclusive approach, pupils at Haslam Park develop into confident, thoughtful and compassionate individuals. They demonstrate respect, kindness and an understanding of difference, are well prepared for the next stage of their education, and leave our school with the knowledge, skills and character needed to thrive in modern Britain.
