There are so many reasons why we are incredibly proud to be named after Daley – he is hard working, resilient, head strong, determined, kind, caring and is not afraid to be who he is. 

Growing up, he was bullied at school, but overcame that huge hurdle and is now the Spokesperson for the charity ChildLine, which supported him through this tough time. Sadly, in 2011, he lost his father, Rob,  to Cancer.  The two were exceptionally close and had a wonderful relationship.  After the loss of his father, Daley took on new responsibility as the "man of the house" and helped his mum, Debbie, by driving his younger brothers to school and their rugby training.

In 2008 Daley became Great Britain’s second youngest male Olympian in Beijing, having become the youngest person to win gold at the European Championships earlier that year.  The Devon diver has since won a combined total of 11 World, Commonwealth and European Championship gold medals, establishing himself as one of the finest in the world.  He's also now the first Team GB diver to win four Olympic medals, having won gold in Tokyo in the 10m synchro with Matty Lee, and his third bronze medal in the 10m platform.

He captured the heart of the nation with his knitting antics in Tokyo - self proclaiming his success for 'Team Great Knitting'.  But there can be no greater success than finally clinching that elusive gold medal, with victory in the men's 10m synchro in Tokyo, as well as making British diving history with his record-breaking four Olympic medals. Today we started our Design Technology Torches Unit.  We looked at lots of different torches: head torches, hand torches and bike torches.  We then designed our own based on the Design Criteria of being strong, bright and light.  We will be making our torches this week and are really excited to turn off our classroom lights and see how effective they are!

Last week we had our Man United Sports Day, we worked with the other Year 4 class and did a carousel of 4 activities.  These included: Dodgeball, Football, Netball and throwing and catching skills.  Fred the Red even made a surprise appearance, we got to have a cuddle with him.  It was a lovely morning as we also focused on our Commonwealth country of New Zealand where we re-created the national flag.  We even watched the New Zealand Rugby team (The All Blacks) doing the Haka!

As part of our Enrichment passport, we have learnt how to sew on a button!  It was a great afternoon and we are now more self sufficient and independent...as well as helping the environment by now not just throwing something away when the button falls off!

To launch our new book "Flotsam" by David Weisner, we investigated different objects and decided, using our inference and deduction, who the objects could belong to.  There was a lot of interest over some of the objects, in particular the binoculars, the bandana, the axe and the magnifying glass!

After having a zoom lesson with the 3Engineers and hearing their new story about bees and pollination, we looked at biodiversity in our Science lesson and how vital bees are to our way of life.  We also discussed how awful insecticides are to our pollinators and how that impacts negatively on our food supply, biodiversity and climate change.  We then designed our own bee house so that the bees could be safe and secure for another day of hard work.

In our last Kapow Art lesson we made maracas that were inspired by the group STOMP.  We designed an African themed pattern and filled them with lentils and corn.  They made a great (although very loud) noise!

We had a lovely explore in Forest school looking for insects to classify.  We found butterflies, moths, worms, beetles and bees.

This term we are looking at our health and fitness in PE.  We enjoyed our lesson this week where we balanced, worked as a team and rolled the balls through our legs to score points. 

In Art, we looked at the artist Pieter Bruegel and his painting called "Children's games" that he painted in 1506.  We were surprised how many games are similar to what we play now.  Miss Marlow then took out outside to play a couple of them - Duck, Duck, Goose and Ladders.

The highlight of our week was going Pond Dipping!  We learnt about how to keep safe, be kind to the creatures and how to classify them using a classification chart.  We found lots of tadpoles, water snails, fresh water shrimp, blackfly larvae and non-biting midge larvae.  

We looked at our third artist this week in our Kapow Art and Design lesson, a gentleman called Edward Hopper.  We acted out his painting of "Tables for ladies", we enjoyed being the waitress and the customers.

Senora Thompson has been teaching us the names of animals in Spanish, we had to act out what each of them did.

Our class novel - The Wolves in the Walls by Neil Gaiman - has us all gripped!  We have written and presented our own monologues as the main character of Lucy.  We also did some drama and role play as each member of the family and acted out a conversation.  Each time we have our English lesson we ask Miss Marlow if she is going to read some more!

This week, in Computing, we have been looking at fake information on the internet.  We learnt that not everything we read online is true and we need to ensure that we research and substantiate our facts before passing them on.

As part of our Geography unit on the Rain Forest, we had a zoom lesson with the artist John Dyer and Jo from Born Free. On Tuesday, to celebrate William Shakespeare's birthday, we had Jo from As Creatives come in and work with us on The Tempest.  We did not know the story before but really enjoyed acting out parts - being Ariel and Caliban - then playing the A, B, C game.  It was a great experience. 

In our RealPE lesson this week we had a lot of fun and got very out of breath doing continuous relays!  We also testes our reactions speeds of catching a ball before its second bounce...we got much better the more we tried.

The Summer Term has started off really well in class. In Art this half term we are looking at different artists, the unit is called "Every picture tells a Story".  This week it was David Hockney's paining entitled "My Parents" (https://www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/hockney-my-parents-t03255).  We discussed its tone and from and what impression we got from his mother and father.  We then enacted the scene with a partner.  Can you tell us why David's dad is reading?

We are working hard in our Power Maths lessons on Fractions.  We completed our first unit and played a fractions game with a partner.  

This week we were off timetable to do our Design Technology unit: Slingshot Cars.  Miss Marlow brought into class a range of toy cars (thank you Joshua) which we had an opportunity to look at and discuss.  We then designed our own cars to the Criteria set.  Making a strong chassis out of lollypop sticks and the moving mechanism out of dowel, straws and wheels the frame of our car was strong and sturdy.  We then created our own net and template to make the sides of the car and a roof.  

What was great fun was racing them against each other to test the fastest car and discuss air resistance and drag.  Our knowledge of mechanisms has increased significantly and we  were really proud of our Slingshot cars. 

On Monday, Daley classed dances our socks off!  We choreographed a dance with friends to music and showed off our skills as part of our Enrichment Passport. 

As part of our Year 4 Enrichment Passport we have been on a Scavenger Hunt!  We were searching for lots of different objects outside including: a flower, a twig, seeing a bird and a squirrel.

Using Purple Mash we have learnt how to code our sprite using IF/ELSE statements and repetition. 

Maths Day was a great success in Daley, we did some extra challenges and consolidated our learning.

In our RealPE lesson this week we were co-ordinating our rolls, catches and then movement with throws.  Our first attempts were somewhat chaotic but we had nailed it by the end of the lesson...Miss Marlow even added 2 balls into the sequence to see if we could!  We did her proud.

Our final Art and Design lesson of this unit was based on Sokari Douglas Camp.  We created our own sculptures using a word to describe us as our shadow.  It was messy, creative and very fun!  We love being part of a living sculpture - our work will be on display in the corridor if you would like to come and see it.

This week has been National Science Week, the theme has been "growth".  We discussed in our class assembly how growth can be a physical, emotional or intellectual thing.  We spent our Science lesson outside digging up worms which tied in well with our topic of food chains.  Everyone by the end had held one, Miss Marlow was super impressed!

This week has been a whirlwind - jam packed with great learning and fun, enrichment activities.  We celebrated International Women's Day on Tuesday 8th March which also coincided with International Women in History Month.  Each day we have been learning about inspirational women like Joan of Arc, Marie Curie, Malala Yousafzai and Rosa Parks.

Miss Marlow also organised for us a zoom lesson with the authors of "Women Who Led The Way" - Mick Manning and Brita Granström - during which we learned about 33 intrepid women who broke the boundaries of society as well as geography in order to explore places, peoples and customs. Some of them took up personal challenges, like climbing the world’s highest mountains or crossing oceans and deserts; others have joined space programmes or pursued scientific research. Some were seeking new places to live. All were and are pioneers. While some are world-famous, others deserve to be better-known.
Among them are Jeanne Baret (France), first woman to circumnavigate the globe; Amelia Earhart (USA) pioneer pilot; Junko Tabei (Japan) first woman to climb Everest; Aud 'the Deep-Minded' (Scandinavia), leader of settlement in Iceland; Mae Carol Jemison (USA), first black woman in space; Mary Anning (England), fossil discoverer; Sylvia Earle (USA), underwater explorer and ocean conservation campaigner; Arunima Sinha (India), first female amputee to climb Mount Everest (https://www.bouncemarketing.co.uk/9781913074432/) .

Our final nod to women in History, was that during our Guided Reading sessions this week we focused on the Queen of the Iceni people...Boudicca!  We learnt that she was a fierce, brave women who had auburn hair and took her people into battle when the Romans tried to take her land from her.  

Playing Spelling Shed every day after lunch is really supporting us in improving our knowledge of the patterns and rules for that week.  We really are making good progress in learning and remembering them.

This half term we are using 2Code in Purple Mash to support our learning in Coding.  We are moving the Sprites, making them speak, changing the background of the code and using IF statements.  It is great fun and Miss Marlow is really impressed with our attitude to "having a go"!

WORLD BOOK DAY 2022!

This year for World Book Day we were asked to "dress up" our classroom door with the front cover of one of our favorite books...Miss Marlow and her hard working team (including the amazing Miss Stubberfield) choose Arthur and the Golden Rope.  We love our new door and want it to stay up forever!

On Monday morning, we were part of the Matilda Live show where many different authors came on and talked about their books, how they became an author and read extracts from their stories.  We met Cressida Cowell and Frank Cotterell-Boyce to name just a few!

On Tuesday morning, we met Adam Hills and heard him talk all about his new book Rock Star Detectives.  Miss Marlow even managed to win us 10 of his new books for our class!  He made us laugh out loud, draw a poster for a Rock show and he even talked in a broad Australian accent at our request!  The wonderful Anne Burns from Bolton Library was our Magic Book Fairy and delivered to us the books...Miss Marlow even bought one for our class library so that we could all read it.

On Thursday morning we were part of the Manchester United Foundation Quiz and we had a giggle about the questions that were being asked - a mix of football and book related questions.  Miss Marlow was embarrassed that she did not recognise any of the footballer's names.  The quiz masters were authors and we found their book in our school library.

Our last treat on World Book Day was a zoom lesson with author and illustrator of The Rema Chronicles - Amy Kim Kibuishi - all the way from America.  We loved her stories and were amazed by her drawings of the characters.

With the Year 4 Times Tables Multiplication test looming, Miss Marlow bought us some amazing card games to help up recall quickly the essential facts!  The rules are simple: have 7 cards face up, roll 2 dice and find the sum of the numbers eg. 3 and 6 = 9, then see if any of your 7 cards is a multiple of 9.  If it is, turn your card over, if it is not take a spare card.  We really enjoyed it!

Senora Thompson was teaching us about facial features and recapping colours this week.  We drew an alien from her description and then created our own.  

In our Art and Design lesson this week we chose an image from our class book - Arthur and the Golden Rope.  We then traced it out and in our sketch books reflected it and used a line of symmetry.  We were amazed by the results!

As part of our Year 4 Enrichment Passport we had to make something using....chocolate!  Miss Marlow was very upset about this as you can imagine!  We made rice crispy cakes and managed to double the mixture so we got 2 to take home with us, 1 would have not been enough!

Our RealPE lesson this week had us doing different relays and we finished off with a throwing target challenge.  It was great fun and we were really out of breath at the end of it.

For Children's Mental Health week, we watched a super Assembly through A Place2Be (https://schoolofkindness.org) and listened to several people talking about their support networks and mental goals.  We then drew a hot air balloon with all our valuable friends and family inside as well as a drawing a start with our emotional goal.  Miss Marlow's was not to get anxious and stress about things out of her control.

Having made our printing blocks last week, this week it was time to get messy and create our repeating patterns and geometric shapes.

Creating our printing blocks of geometric shapes this week was great, it tied in nicely with our Maths (perimeter).  Next week we are really excited to create our repeating or symmetrical designs.

Who knew making simple circuits could be so exciting? We created circuits using a different range of electrical components and experimented with multiple cells and discussed the brightness of bulbs.  We even drew our circuits using scientific symbols. and could explain why some circuits would not work.

We played "In my garden..." to begin our Jigsaw lesson on Dreams and Goals this week.  It got us all swapping places.  We also listened to a brilliant song and learnt about how to become more resilient.

In our Geography lesson this week we learnt about how to filter water to make it safe to drink.  Obviously, our water was not clean enough to drink but we learnt a lot about the process that dirty, sewage water undergoes to become drinkable again.

We started off this week with a school assembly on World Religion Day, lead by Mrs Haslam.  We learnt the importance of acceptance and facts about different religions.

The highlight of our week was an online lesson with Axel Scheffler who illustrated The Gruffalo.  He taught us how to make a miniature book!

This week in Art and Design we created our own printing blocks using playdough.  We used different objects (buttons, screws, corks etc) to make imprints into the playdough then chose a printing ink colour to sponge onto our printing block.  After that we experimented with different colours and had a great time.

This half term in Jigsawy (PSHE) we are thinking about our dreams and goals.  We had a fun activity matching up cards to make a story of someone's football dream.

To kick off our Geography Water topic we had United Utilities on a zoom lesson.  Janet was really wonderful and made us laugh especially when she did mime and used her props to show how we use water and then when we were doing the toilet paper experiment!   I think our biggest take away from the session is only flush the 3 Ps down the loo....poo, pee and paper!!

Our first Art lesson this half term was using charcoal and once we got over how grubby our fingers were, we had a blast!  We were given words like tiny, huge, messy, smooth and fast and needed to represent them in an abstract manner.  

This half term in PE, we are learning the following skills and in our first lesson we used our chest passes to warm up and swap partners and then we did 3 limb activities!  We laughed a lot and some of us even managed not to fall over!

At the end of the Autumn Term we finished off our Science unit on States of Matter by creating our very own miniature Water Cycle!  We consolidated our learning about evaporation, condensation and learnt about precipitation and collection.

This week we have been doing our Design Technology lessons - Levers and Linkages.  We have planned, designed, made and evaluated them against the Design Criteria.  They needed to move smoothly, be festive, colourful and stand up on their own.  We think you will agree that there are some smashing examples below!

We are getting really good at maintaining our balance when we jump in PE.  We have had a lot of fun in the warm up this week when Miss Marlow called out numbers that corresponded with an instruction:

1 . Move around carefully

2. Change how you are moving around

3. Join up with a friend to do 3 different jumps...in unison

4. Join up with 4 friends to do a balance and 

5.  ....our favourite...do the conga!

In our PSHE lesson this week we needed to say why we were special.  We drew a self portrait (using mirrors) and then wrote on a paper chain...."I am special because...."  We then did one for someone else in our class.  We had some lovely comments about being a good friend, being kind and supportive, making people laugh and being helpful.  Well done, Daley.

Our focus this week in English has been how to punctuate direct speech - we have worked hard on the success criteria that we came up with and are remembering to start a new line for a new speaker.  We continued on a conversation with Free Lance and either Weasel Face or Potato Head (not the characters real names but nick names given by Free Lance!).  Next week we are creating our own mythical creature...the more gruesome the better!

Before we begin our handwriting lesson on Thursday afternoon, we practice our gross and find motor skills.  We love following the exercises and sometimes hum along to the rather catchy music that accompanies them!

This week we moved onto our next English text called "Free Lance and the Lake of Skulls".  We discussed what we thought the book was going to be about, read and understood the first 2 chapters and then did some Hot Seating in the role of the knight.  It was great fun!  Using this book we are going to write our own narrative story based on the events and characters from the book, we can't wait.

We celebrated Diwali on Monday and created a school Rangoli pattern and made a bead necklace!

We are working hard on our math's strategies and calculations by doing our daily Fluent in 5.  We are getting much more confident and quicker at working out these sums in 5 minutes!

On Thursday 11th November we celebrated Remembrance Day.  After discussing the significance of the day we designed poems based on a text from The Wizard of Oz and created Blackout Poetry.  We then learnt about the importance of the poppy and made poppies using a weaving technique called God's eyes.  We chose the colours specifically to match the poppies and are really pleased with the outcomes. 

As ever, Daley loved their Spanish lesson with Senora Thompson!  This week she was teaching them dance moves through instructions.  They had a blast and the song was in our heads for the rest of the afternoon.

This week we finished off our final genre of writing for Varjak Paw.  We have written a Discussion text putting forward point for and against whether Varjak should to Outside to find a dog.  The children did really well and enjoyed editing their work to make it include all the success criteria of the text.

On Wednesday, Miss Marlow signed our class up to a webinar held and hosted by 3 submarine engineers!  They have written 3 books about how to help our planet and we watched the first one called "Stop Dropping Litter".  Their website is amazing and has their other 2 books online (https://www.the3engineers.com/books).  As a result of their lesson, we are going to organise a litter picking event with the help of the School Council.  We understand how important it is to make a small change and help improve the sustainability of our energy usage. 

This week in our PSHE lesson we needed to not make assumptions about people - not to judge a book by it's cover.  First, we practised our listening skills by playing a game called "What are you doing?" where we had to mime one action and then answer the question with a different one.  That second action would then be used by the person who asked the question.  It sounds more complicated that it was...it was hilarious and we had such a fun time!

In PE this week we looked at balancing and jumping - we moved around the hall and then created balances with friends before practicing different jumping styles.

This week we were off timetable to do our Art Topic!  We loved it!  We were looking at Anglo Saxon artwork and sculptures and seeing what detail and materials they used.  Using water colours we did a colour wheel where we made secondary colours from the primary ones (red, blue and yellow) as well as thinking about the size and shape of the paint brush we were going to choose.  We then looked at the Bayeux Tapestry - thought about how useful it is to us today and why - before choosing a scene to recreate in water colour.  

On Monday we were learning all about Black History.  We studied a gentleman called Walter Tull.  We looked at how being a footballer today was different or similar to when Walter was a footballer; we looked at photos and videos of Walter and learnt that he was the first black officer EVER, in World War 1; that he fought in the Football Battalion and that he was sadly killed in action and his body was never recovered.  We learnt that he was hard working, dedicated, a team player and a wonderful leader.

We produced a piece of collaborative art work on him...we were really proud of ourselves.

We are getting really good at Fencing and absolutely love our lessons!

We had a fun science lesson on Magnets and their every day uses - we watched a few videos about how they help us recycle and how a man can scale a tall structure to repair or paint it.  Here are a couple of images of our leaflets:

Our new Jasmine PE lessons are really good fun - this week we followed a race track and had to practice different ways of moving along the path laid out for us.  We then had a go at hopscotch...with mixed success!  Apologies that some of the photos are blurred, we were moving at speed!

This week, as part of National Poetry week, we have been looking at Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes.  We have been rehearsing Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf and will be preforming it in class on Monday 11th October (videos will be sent out on Dojo!).  We have been looking at the vocabulary, stating our opinions of it and also using our tone and intonation to practice preforming it.  

LEARNING OUR TIMES TABLES BY USING TIMES TABLE ROCKSTAR!!!!

After last week's attract and repel lesson using magnets, this week we investigated what was and was not magnetic in our classroom.  It was loud but lots of learning was done!

We investigated the poles of Magnets this week in Science - understanding the different poles attract and opposite poles repel.  We then tested what was magnetic in our classroom, including Miss Marlow's lanyard!

In our Anglo Saxon topic this week, we designed our own villages.  We had to include a fence for protection against invading parties and animals, a water source for our crops, huts and farm animals.  Each village, although similar, was brilliant and different.

We received our signed copy of Michael Rosen's poetry book this week!  Bananas in my Ears!

With Manchester United this week, we played Tik Toc catching.  We practiced our throwing technique - giving ourselves different challenges of height and distance.  We then did a skittles game and finally we were in four teams trying to get our beanbag into the hula hoop for 1 point OR onto the spot for 10.  We all took the challenge showing we are fearless and want to push ourselves!

We did our first Science investigation this week - looking at Forces.  We used Forcemeters to measure the amount of Newtons that were needed to pull our drinks bottles over different surfaces.  Do you think the greatest force was needed for:

our table, the carpet, sandpaper, foam, linoleum or a wool rug? 

As part of National Coding Week we got to use the BB8 Star Wars robots!  We loved the way that they lit up and beeped while they moved.  We created tracks to knock down our Skittle cups.  It was great fun and we can't wait to play with them again soon!

As part of our PSHE Jigsaw lesson we got to act out different jobs people have around our school: Caretaker, Governor, Cleaner, Lunchtime Supervisors, Teacher and Parent/Carer.  We thought that our friends did a great job and we guessed successfully what they were doing.  We then discussed how these important jobs help us to learn in school and keep safe.

We love our Man United PE lessons with Sam.  He teaches us about teamwork, resilience as well as throwing and catching skills.  We have been playing Dodge ball (and secret Dodge ball) this half term.

This week we did some research into Daley and we created a display for our class door.  We used symmetry to copy and complete the picture of him...and we are really pleased with our creations!  

On Thursday morning, Miss Marlow had organised a special treat for us!  We were part of a webinar with.....drum roll please....Michael Rosen!  Not only a famous British children's author and poet, who has written over 140 books including "We're Going on a Bear Hunt" and his first every book called "Mind your own business", but also the Children's Laureate from June 2007 to June 2009!  What a joy!

Michael had us learning and reciting poems all together, with many other Bolton primary schools.  We learnt "Hand on the Bridge" which was wonderful and then we laughed ourselves silly with "Chocolate Cake".
